Up The Bracket alludes to a slang term used by British comedian Tony Hancock in Hancocks Half Hour, implying a punch in the throat, which is a most fitting title for this, The Libertines raucous and brilliant 2002 debut. Recorded by none other than the legendary Mick Jones of the Clash, his not too rough and not too polished production wonderfully emphasizes the pedigree of The Libertines sound and the originality of it. The Londoners have managed to imbue snotty garage rock with a sort of wistful romanticism here, producing an undercurrent of genuine soul that is hard to ignore.
